9 Organizing Basics

Becoming more organized doesn’t have to be complicated especially when you know some organizing basics. These are simple, easy to follow ideas that give you a good foundation for decluttering and simplifying your daily life.

  1. Start small and don't try to do it all at once. Begin with 1 drawer or 1 shelf. Then work up from there.
  2. Use the 2 minute rule. If you can complete a task in 2 minutes or less, do it now. It will take twice as long if you put it off. {Here are 7 organizing tasks you can do in 7 minutes or less!)
  3. Keep the clutter at bay by implementing a 10 minute tidy every day.
  4. Give every item in your house a home - a place where it lives when not in use. Easy to find, easier to put away.
  5. Laundry baskets are great for gathering items that have been left out and then for returning them to their homes.
  6. Keep most used cleaning items in a portable container that you can carry around the house with you.
  7. On Sunday, take 5-10 minutes to review your calendar for the week. Remind yourself about what’s going on and who needs to be where and when.
  8. Keep only one main calendar to track your appointments, commitments and activities. Track everything there.
  9. Keep your to-do list out where you can see it. Out of sight, out of mind!
