Organizing Your Car

I don’t know about you, but I spend a lot of time in my car; driving to work, hauling the kids around, running errands, and so on and so forth.  For me having a clean, organized car makes it all just little less stressful.

Organizing Your Car: Clean Sweep

One of the first things you want to do is to take everything out of your car. Get rid of the trash, take things in the house that belong in the house, make the kids take their toys back to their rooms.  Do a general clean out just like you would in any other space in your home. Then get out the shop vac and vacuum up all other dried up french fries and the sand from last month’s trip to the beach.

Organizing Your Car: Trash Receptacle

One of the things that really accumulates in cars is trash, but our cars don’t come with a trash can.  It’s important that you provide something for the trash or otherwise it is going to end up on the floor. You could do something really easy, like a plastic grocery bag that you put over the armrest in your car and when it’s filled, you take it out. You can even buy trash bins that go on the back of the seat.

Organizing Your Car: Storage

Our cars generally don’t come with a lot of storage, but you can do a couple small things to make a big impact.  Add an extra cup (or cup holder organizer) in your cup holder to hold small things like pens, gum and extra change. I love over-the-seat organizers for adults and kids. Because they need to be entertained, kids bring a lot of stuff into the car. An over-the-seat organizer for works well because you can add their toys, their crayons, and maybe even some snacks

For the back of the car; whether you have an open back storage area or you have a trunk, we collect a lot of stuff back there.  There are some things that we need to have in the car with us, like an emergency kit with flairs, jumper cables, your shopping bags, but they just roll around in the space. It’s vital to have some sort of a container that allows you to corral all those things. You can go online and search for trunk organizers and you’ll see all sorts of things. Personally I just use a milk crate. It keeps everything contained. If I need to clean out the back of my car, I can pick it up and take it out.

What is your best tip to keeping your car decluttered?
