Some Bibb Students Double-Dosed With Flu Vaccine

The Macon-Bibb Health Department is investigating how 383 Bibb County students were improperly given double doses of the flu vaccine.

According to Jennifer Jones, spokesperson for the North Central Health District, a parent called several weeks ago to ask why her child had received two doses of the flu vaccine.

Then the district launched an investigation, which included poring over the records of every Bibb student that received two doses to determine if that was appropriate.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends certain populations are better protected from the flu by getting two doses.  Jones says that includes anyone who has not has two flu vaccines since July 2010 and is under the age of 9.

Jones says the health district met with the school system today to try to confirm correct contact information for the 383 students affected to send a letter explaining the situation.

Jones also says there is no danger in getting two doses of the flu vaccine, in fact, there may be a better immune response.
