Northeast High Wrestling Champion Looks to Future

Northeast High Wrestling Champion Looks to Future

By Daniel Daniels, Bibb County School District Communications Intern

A Northeast High School senior used a “Single Leg Shot” to wrestle his way to a state championship title.

Allen Moss won the 220-pound weight class Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class AA State Wrestling Championship last month at the Macon Coliseum. He defeated William Henagen of Lovett High School to take the state crown. He also recently signed a scholarship to play football at the University of the Cumberlands.

Although Allen is gifted athletically and has numerous sports commitments, he does not let that interfere with his schoolwork. He is third in his class while holding a 3.8 GPA. Allen lives with his uncle, Marvin Booze, and Allen attributes his success in school to his uncle.

“That’s pretty much I guess the driving force that allows me to do so well in school,” he said.

Northeast Field House Naming Ceremony Set for Thursday

The Northeast Field House will be named for the late football player, Albert 'Al' James Lucas in a ceremony Thursday.

That comes after the Board of Education voted in January to grant the request for the dedication, according to a release.

Lucas, a Northeast High graduate and football player, played professional football for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers.

The ceremony takes place at the school Thursday, March 21 at 3 p.m.

Lucas was the son of State Sen. David Lucas and Macon City Councilwoman Elaine Lucas.

Three Minutes With Howard High Football Coach Barney Hester

Barney Hester officially took over as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Howard High School earlier this month.

Coach Hester comes from Tattnall Square Academy, where he has led players to 11 state football championship titles since 1982. While at Tattnall, he served in such positions as Headmaster, Athletic Director, Head Football Coach, and Head Track Coach. As Head Track Coach, he also led the track team to at least five state championship victories.

Prior to his work at Tattnall, Coach Hester worked at Josey Academy and Gordon Ivey High School before joining the coaching staff at Georgia Southern University when the university first began its college program.

He is originally from Dublin, where he grew up playing football for East Laurens High School.

QUESTION: What made you decide to join the Bibb County School District?
