A Big Night For FPD Fans and Families | HS Sports
When the FPD Vikings start their 2013 season tonight against George Walton, their football field will have a name.
Athletic Director and head football coach Greg Moore announced last May that the school would name the field after Austin Childers.
The 22-year-old graduated from First Presbyterian Day School in 2009. He is battling a rare mitochondrial disease.
Coach Moore, family and friends surprised Austin with the announcement last spring at Macon's hospice facility where Austin is a patient.
"Football has always been his passion," said Moore. "He's a red and black Viking kind of guy, and always has been. [Austin] loves what we've got going on and always wants to talk about what's next at our school and what's happening, particularly with our football team."
"For us to be able to honor him with the naming of the field, where those kinds of things are important, hopefully do something that honors and brings joy to his life right this minute was an easy choice for us."
FPD has recently renovated their stadium, adding a new press box. In the last two weeks a new sign displays 'Austin Childers Field'.
