Two Mercer athletes selected in MLB Draft | HS Sports
Day three of the MLB Draft saw two Mercer Bears get selected by big league franchises.
The Chicago Cubs picked junior third baseman Chesny Young in the 14th round. Two rounds later, Young's teammate and senior pitcher Brandon Barker was drafted by the Atlanta Braves.
The Cubs get a hot bat in Chesny Young. He had a .401 average and 105 hits as a sophomore, before leading the team with a .348 average as a junior. Young also finished second on the team in hits with 71 this season.
Atlanta loves to keep the stable full of young pitchers, and they get a dangerous arm from Brandon Barker. He led the team with 63 strikeouts in 2014 with a 3.84 earned run average. The senior posted a 4-4 record on the season.
A central Georgia native went a few rounds later.
The Los Angeles Angels drafted Montrose, Ga., native and former West Laurens Raider, Eason Spivey in the 24th round. Spivey led the North Georgia Nighthawks with a .328 batting average, and started all 49 games at catcher as a junior.
Former Bleckley County and Georgia State player Chase Raffield went in the 37th round, to the St. Louis Cardinals. Raffield led the Panthers with a .356 average on 73 hits in the 2014 season.
