Racers Ready Magnolia Street for Soapbox Derby

On Sunday, crazy cars and costumed racers will take over Magnolia Street for the annual Soapbox Derby Race.

Teams will put the pedal to the metal, so to speak, as they race for top spots and the crowd's favor.

13WMAZ caught up with the Middle Georgia Demons who crafted a car named "Lucy-fur" for the race.

The all-girl roller derby team said they built the car from the ground up using some unusual components.

"We took an 100-year-old wine rack from a Spanish mission in California and drew up the plans for it, we took out the individual racks, and we turned on its side and used it as our frame from the car," said Amber Whitley of Macon.

The driver, Wanda Stokes, said because they built the car themselves, she knows how it runs.

"It's like a beast," said Stokes. "It's fast, you know, it's heavy, and as soon as they let me go, it's like riding a raging bull to the bottom of the hill."

If you want to see if the Middle Georgia Demons come in first on the finish line, you can go to the race on Sunday. It starts at noon.
