Mercer Volleyball Prepares for Friday Opener | News
MACON-- On Friday, the Mercer volleyball team will open the season at the UAB Invitational. It's one of three tournaments that make up the first portion of the Bears schedule.
Mercer won't play at home until September 20 when they host conference foe East Tennessee State.
Damian Elder leads the Bears for the second season. He'll be working with three returning starters. Saturday, Elder stepped back and watched his team play in the annual Orange and Black Scrimmage.
"The carry over from last year is our defense," said Elder. "Even just watching our scrimmage right now, it's apparent to me that that's going to be probably our main strength. We've been working a lot on our serving in the preseason. So we're hoping that's going to be a strength. But I know defense is. Every day in the gym we spend at least a third of our practice honing that and pushing that and doing that over and over."
Mercer finished 7-11 in conference play in 2012. They were picked to finish seventh this season.
