News

The United Way of Central Georgia held their annual Campaign Kickoff Thursday morning.

United Way President and CEO George McCanless told 13WMAZ that last year the organization raised just over $4 million.

"We believe we can raise that and more in this campaign season to benefit these 32 agencies that help the citizens," McCanless said.

This year's goal is $4.15 million and was unveiled by McCanless during his remarks to a room of more than 200 business leaders and United Way coordinators.

The money is used to assist 32 agencies in the way of grants.

United Way has made fighting poverty a priority in the Macon area. Statistics indicate 29 percent of children in Central Georgia live in poverty, 25 percent of ninth graders fail to graduate in four years and 30 percent of children in Georgia are obese or overweight.

Super Bowl Champion and NCAA Coach Bill Curry was keynote speaker for the United Way event.
