Polls Open in Macon-Bibb | News
Polls have opened for the election of Macon-Bibb's first consolidated government.
Voters are choosing a Mayor and nine Commissioners.
The polls are open through 7 p.m.
The new government will replace Macon's Mayor and 15-member City Council and the current five-member County Commission.
On Monday, the Board of Elections were getting prepared for voters.
During early voting, errors placed hundreds of voters in the wrong precincts and 90 of them cast votes on the wrong races.
The Board of Election have express poll cases ready for poll-workers to pick up. Jeanetta Watson, Board of Election supervisor, says this will help poll-workers should someone try to vote in the wrong district.
"We've ironed out all the wrinkles if by chance something like that does happen it will be easy to fix because that voter should be within the district limits at that precinct," said Watson. "We would create the voter card that they would need to vote for the correct candidate that they would need to vote for but we anticipate that everything should go smoothly at the precincts on Election Day."
Voter district confusion led to long lines during early voting, but Watson says that shouldn't be a problem on Election Day
"When we were doing early voting, we have everybody in Bibb County," said Watson. "So, it will be a little different at the precinct they will have only the voters that are eligible to vote at their precinct in their express poll database."
Jeanetta Watson says to vote you will need a valid I.D. You also should know what district you are voting in. Watson says if you have any questions, you can call the Board of Elections at 478-621-6622.
