Elected Commissioners Excited to Start Work | News
Five of the nine new commissioners were elected Tuesday.
Gary Bechtel won District 1, Elaine Lucas in District 3, Bert Bivins in District 5, Scotty Shepherd won District 7, and Al Tillman claimed District 9.
We caught up with all five the day after elections.
Shepherd says, "I think we're going to be fine. Elaine and I have spoken during the campaign. We've not always been on the same side, but I think it's where we can work together."
"Some of the people haven't been in any form of government at all, and so I think we need to get off on a good start, and the best way to do that is to work with the new people coming on," says Bivins.
"We start fresh in January building the new government, doing budgets, and trying to make up the hard decisions that are going to be necessary to get the city moving forward," Bechtel adds.
Tillman says, "And I have no reason to doubt that we can all put out differences aside and work for the betterment of the people."
"The new government is going to make everyone take stock into work very hard to first learn what's in this new charter, learn about the new form of government that we have adopted and you'll see a move toward suggesting some changes," says Lucas.
The four remaining commission seats will be decided by runoffs.
