Ellis Asks Reichert to Denounce Erickson's Column | News
C. Jack Ellis calls a recent newspaper column by Fox News contributor Erick Erickson "race baiting" and has asked Macon Mayor Robert Reichert to denounce it.
The former two-term Macon mayor held a news conference Monday morning on the City Hall steps. Erickson's column was published in The Telegraph on Friday.
The opinion piece, headlined "Scaring all the white voters," was mostly a recap of all the races in last week's election. It contained only a few paragraphs about Ellis.
Reichert and Ellis are squaring off in a runoff election Oct. 15 to become the first mayor of the consolidated Macon and Bibb County.
Erickson is a former Macon City Council member, radio talk show host and conservative political activist.
On the mayoral race, he wrote, "Reichert does not scare black voters the way Ellis scares white voters."
In his news conference, Ellis said, "My question is who's scaring all white people? If you read this article ... it is saying that if I'm elected all white people should be afraid. Nothing could be further from the truth."
Erickson's article accused Ellis of being divisive and doing little "to be a bridge builder between communities in Macon."
Ellis also took issue with that.
"I want to work to bridge the racial divide we have here, unlike Mr. Erickson who is a flamethrower. ... I call on Mayor Reichert to denounce this person."
Ellis described Erickson as a Reichert supporter.
Reichert declined to comment on Erickson's article and Ellis's request that he denounce it.
