13WMAZ Celebrates 60 Years | News
13WMAZ celebrated a very special anniversary.
60 years ago on September 27, 1953, Channel 13 and A.M. 940 13WMAZ signed on.
We are the fourth-oldest station in Georgia. We celebrated by catching up with some of 13WMAZ's pioneers.
Jim Lawhorn was one of the first people to launch 13WMAZ as chief engineer in 1953.
The show was captured on one film camera and two studio cameras. "That one film camera kind of went up in smoke an hour before air time. So the boys got busy and repaired and we just made it," he says.
"I was here from '75 to '95. I was here when they first had film. I remember gun smoke being on film. Let's see, then it changed to video tape, one-inch tape, and then digital like it is now," says former director Roy Beck.
