Mercer Football Player Still in National Spotlight | News
Wednesday, sophomore Alex Avant put on a microphone and did a Skype interview with ESPNU.
There is still a national buzz about his outstanding play when he intercepted the ball against Drake last Saturday.
He busted a few tackles, used the whole field, and peeled off 35 yards for a touchdown.
ESPN made it their top play of the week in the Top Ten countdown.
Alex says he's taking all the attention in stride, but he remembers exactly what he was feeling when everything played out.
"I was doing a quarterback blitz and he knew I was blitzing, so he threw it fast, so I tipped it and I think it bounced off a teammate and landed in my hands," Avant explained. "I started going left, and then right out of bounds, somebody came to my right, I moved right and then left, and I saw a wide open space and I ran towards the sideline and got in the end zone!"
Head coach Bobby Lamb said he knew it was a good play, but even he was a bit surprised by the publicity. He says they'll take it.
"You cannot put a value on that play and what it has done, not only for Mercer Football, but Mercer," Lamb said. "Any time you get on SportsCenter and you get the top play, everyone in the world is looking at it. Our email box has been full from recruits all over the country wanting to know what Mercer is all about."
Avant says his phone exploded with calls and texts for 24 hours after the play.
The Bears hope the defensive back will come up big again this weekend as they travel to the West Coast to take on San Diego State.
