Mercer Women's Basketball Begins Practice | News
Thursday kicked off the first day of the 2013-14 season for the Mercer women's basketball team.
Head Coach Susie Gardner began the session by dedicating the season to the team's Ghana friends. She said kids overseas would be so thankful to have a gym, so she said when the girls get tired to try and remember the things that are important.
The team is coming off a twenty-win season.
But turning the program around comes with a price tag.
The Bears will have a bit of a bull's-eye on their backs, but the kids say that is fine with them.
Sharnea Boykin is a senior and has worked through the hard years and the more successful times.
"To get more than 20-plus wins is going to be tough, first, because everyone knows who we are now. Before, we weren't anything to these teams," Boykin said. "But now, we've shown we can compete with anybody, so it will be interesting to see what they do to stop our game play."
One notable addition for the Bears is the return of Briana Williams. She was the ASUN Freshman of the Year and a scoring machine before she hurt her knee last season.
The Bears' first game is October 31st against Northwood.
