Southwest, Barden Mom Nominated for State Title I Parent Advisory Council | News
Toronda Davis, mother of two Bibb County students, was the District's nominee for State Superintendent Dr. John Barge’s Title I Parent Advisory Council.
Ms. Davis's children attend Southwest High School and Barden Elementary School. She stays active in their education by constantly volunteering at both schools, and tries to stop by the schools at least once or twice a week.
At Southwest she is largely involved with the band and is a member of the Parent Advisory Council. She chaperons the band on the bus ride to football games, and once they arrive she works the concession stand. At Barden she is President of the Parent Advisory Council, raises money for field trips, helps monitor the lunchroom, and assists in the classrooms and library.
Although she is a single mother working two jobs, she prioritizes her involvement at the schools because she wants to show her support for her children.
“Support is the key," she said. "If I can show my children how much I support them and encourage them to know it can be done, I feel as if I have done my job.”
She also encourages other parents to volunteer in the schools.
“I think it is a good thing to volunteer in the schools," she said. "It plays a big role not only in your children’s lives but for those who do not have their parent role there.”
