Attorney: Springdale Elementary Incident a Misunderstanding

An attorney for Christian Ogol says this is "all a misunderstanding." Ogol sparked a controversy at Springdale Elementary School.

A woman claimed he tried to snatch her second grade son and another girl outside of the school at dismissal time Wednesday afternoon. The man was chased and held until police arrived on the scene.

Keith Fitzgerald, the attorney of Ogol, says his client is Nigerian and has only been in the United States since June. He's been to the school to pick up his grand children several times and is on the authorized pick-up list for the children at Springdale Elementary.

He says his client may have just gotten a little confused.

A news release from the Bibb Sheriff's office says Ogol is charged with two counts of False imprisonment, one count of simple battery, and one count of Attempted Kidnapping. The sheriff's department says Ogol is Nigerian, and speaks only Swahili.

Fitzgerald says his client does not speak Swahili, but a different dialect of Nigerian, and they are looking for a translator. His client is still in jail. District attorney David Cooke has declined to comment.
