Mercer Runs Away with 108-61 Exhibition Win | News
MACON, Ga. - Junior Briana Williams was one of five players in double figures for the Mercer women's basketball team, scoring a game-high 28 points, to lead the Bears to a 108-61 exhibition win over Northwood on Thursday evening at Hawkins Arena.
Briana Williams shot 10-of-15 from the field, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and added seven assists in her first game action since Feb. 25, 2012.
Briana Williams was joined in double-figures by junior Precious Bridges (20 points), junior Alicia Williams (17 points), senior Kendra Grant (15 points) and freshman Taylor McClintock (11 points).
Senior point guard Sharnea Boykin picked up right where she left off last season, piling up 16 assists in the win which would've been a new career-high for the Atlanta, Ga. native had Thursday night's contest been a regular season affair.
Bridges scored her 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field while Grant finished the night with a double-double, pairing her 15 points with 10 rebounds.
Mercer wasted no time jumping out to a big early lead using a three-pointer from Briana Williams to take a 16-2 lead with 15:28 left in the first half.
With the score 49-32 going into halftime, Northwood continued to hang around before the Bears put the game out of reach. A 21-4 run over a 7:18 span, capped by another trifecta by Briana Williams, put Mercer ahead to stay at 76-42.
Mercer's bench out-scored Northwood's reserves 49-12 while the Bears dominated in transition using a 28-6 advantage in fast break points to come away with the win.
Mercer now sets its sights on its 2013-14 regular season opener against Western Carolina on November 8. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Hawkins Arena.
