Mercer President Bill Underwood named citizen of the year | News
Mercer University President Bill Underwood captured the Citizen of the Year award Thursday at the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce's 153rd annual meeting.
In announcing the award, chamber member Chris Sheridan said Underwood was the only person nominated for the award.
Sheridan said the unanimous vote came because of the work Underwood's done in Macon, at Mercer and in other parts of the nation and world.
Meanwhile, Macon businessman Robbo Hatcher received the chamber's Chairman's Award. In addition to other activities, Hatcher served as the 2013 chairman of the Macon Economic Development Commission.
Donna Hammrick received the chamber's Ambassador of the Year Award.
Underwood said he was surprised and grateful. He also said he's pleased to be a part of what he called "the renaissance" that's taking place in Macon. In part, Underwood said, it's because of the decision to consolidate the Macon and Bibb County governments.
"I think the passing of the SPLOST a couple of years back, consolidation are all significant parts of some tremendous energy that I'm seeing in Macon," Underwood said.
In addition to the awards, Jason Delves became the 2014 chamber chairman. He succeeded Starr Purdue.
