Bibb Commission awards animal shelter contract | News
Bibb County commissioners picked the company that will build their new multi-million dollar animal shelter in a special called meeting Friday morning.
The board awarded the contract to ICB of Warner Robins. They bid $15,000 less than a Bibb County contractor, Warren Associates. However, the winning bid was $600,000 more than the $2 million the county planned to pay for construction.
Commissioners Gary Bechtel, Bert Bivins, and Chairman Sam Hart supported the ICB contract. Lonzy Edwards opposed, saying the job should go to a company in Bibb County. Joe Allen did not vote, but said they should wait on the decision and pass it on to the new consolidated Macon-Bibb commission next year.
Bibb County workers have cleared much of the land at the site on Fulton Mill Road over the past few months. Construction is slated to start early next year and be finished late summer.
The new building will replace the current Macon-Bibb animal shelter located near the landfill. County officials say that one is too small and plagued with health and safety problems.
