Phi Beta Sigma marks 100th birthday | News
Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert presented a proclamation to the local brothers of Phi Beta Sigma for their service to the community.
Reichert said, "They do so much good work and it's such a wonderful spirit of volunteerism. We need more people in our community to step up and volunteer and do the kind of things that they're doing."
The members then briefly celebrated with a balloon release in front of the Macon-Bibb Government center.
Member Gregory Brown said, "We'll be releasing these balloons in memory of our illustrious founders."
Shortly after, the brothers gave a helping hand at Macon's Daybreak Outreach center, a day center for the homeless.
President-elect Daniel Dukes said the honor were a century in the making.
"It's wonderful. As we listened to and read the proclamation, and when he talked about a century of service, it really kind of hits home that Phi Beta Sigma has been doing this for a hundred years now."
