Larry Schlesinger was sworn in Tuesday evening at the start of the Macon-Bibb commission meeting.

His wife and daughter stood next to him, and his wife held a Hebrew Bible for him as he took the oath.

Other commissioners were sworn in in December. Schlesinger was not part of that group because of problems with election results in District 2. He earned the seat after defeating former Macon councilman Henry Ficklin in a special election ordered by a judge.

Also during Tuesday's meeting, the commission officially adopted the new Macon-Bibb seal. It depicts the Block House at Fort Hawkins, surrounded by the founding years for Macon, Bibb County, and the consolidated government. Mayor Robert Reichert says the phrase 'forward together' written at the bottom represents one of his main goals for Macon-Bibb.

"In addition to consolidating the government, we think we're unifying the people of Macon and Bibb County, and that's what is going to create such a powerhouse. When the people of Macon and Bibb County come together and speak with one voice, we think we can be very effective," says Reichert.

He says it will take a few months to turn the design into decals and stamps.

Earlier Tuesday, County Manager Dale Walker updated the commission on a variety of projects, including the new 800Mhz emergency radio system. It was supposed to be up and running by the start of 2014, but Walker says it will now take until the middle of February to complete it. He says that's because city and county technology crews had to spend much of their time consolidating finance and payroll systems for the new government.
