An empty building on Third Street in downtown Macon was once home to a Sears department store, but it closed down decades ago.

Now, architect Bob Brown has a new idea for the place.

A new home for the recently consolidated Bibb County Sheriff's Office.

"The second floor of this building will be for sheriff's department persons and properties crimes, traffic division, and some of the administrative offices," says Brown.

On the main floor will be an area for civil processes, central records, probation offices, and a room for training.

"One of the uses we want to have for that is sort of a critical incident room. So that if we had a major incident in the community, we could bring the people involved in the response for that," says Sheriff David Davis.

In the basement will be more than 35,000 boxes of records from the city, county, and sheriff's office.

Sheriff Davis says all of the records and offices are currently spread throughout the city.

"It will really get us out of the cramped quarters we're in now down at the government center and also some of the facilities we have down here a the LEC," says Davis. "All the investigators will be together. They can discuss cases. They can discuss what's going on in the community and help in solving crimes."

Brown says turning all of these ideas into a reality will take changes like tearing down a few walls, upgrading carpets, and installing new electric.

Brown says construction is projected to start in early spring and wrap up late this year.
