Bibb students compete in spelling bee

The spelling bee was held at Central High School.

Coordinator Britney Morris says 31 students vied for a chance to represent the county in the upcoming district bee.

Morris says the participants ranged from 4th to 8th grade.

1st through 3rd place winners took home a trophy and cash prizes.

They say the competition requires hard work and plenty of study time.

Christian Lee, a 5th Grader at Springdale Elementary won 1st place. He explained his study habits.

"Everyday, I look up 10 words on Dictionary.com... (the) definition and the spelling," said Lee.

"It increases competitiveness, encourages children to delve into extracurricular activities that are academic," said Morris.

The winners will go to Fort Valley State University to compete in the district bee on March 1st.
