P&Z grants new hearing on historic church demolition | News
Tremont Temple Baptist Church scored a victory at Monday's Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission meeting.
The church was denied a demolition permit in December to raze its former sanctuary on Forsyth Street largely because of Historic Macon Foundation's objections citing the historic building was integral to downtown Macon's historic district.
Commissioner members voted 3-2 Monday in favor of Tremont's appeal for a new hearing for a demolition permit.
That hearing will be held in two weeks.
Tremont, whose sanctuary is now located on Bloomfield Road, has a buyer for its former century-old building - a developer who wants to tear it down to build a Dunkin' Donuts.
After its victory to stop the demolition, Historic Macon said it made a comparable offer to the church matching the Dunkin' Donuts' developer, but the church didn't respond to the offer.
Commission members said Monday, the church needed to present new evidence at the new hearing if it's going to be granted a demolition permit.
