GOP candidates debate in Macon | News
The 7 Republicans running for the U.S. Senate being vacated by Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) gathered at the Anderson Conference Center in Macon for a debate.
Candidates Karen Handel, Jack Kingston, Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey, David Perdue, Art Gardner, and Derrick Grayson discussed everything from health care to how they would handle Robins Air Force Base with an upcoming BRAC.
All 7 candidates told 13WMAZ they would support a repeal of Obamacare. Most candidates also talked about limiting government spending.
One candidate, Paul Broun, said he would go as far as trying to completely eliminate the Department of Education, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Labor, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Most of candidates staked out the conservative position on most issues, but Art Gardner says he supports same sex marriage and a woman's right to choose. He says while Republicans have strong fiscal policy, their positions on social issues alienate younger voters.
After the debate, the Bibb County Republicans announced the results of a straw poll of audience members. In order to vote in the straw poll, people had to pay one dollar. Karen Handel won.
The Republican Primary is scheduled for May 20th. The GOP nominee will face one of 6 Democratic candidates in the November general election.
