Forest Hill Road project underway

It's been 15 years in the making, but Forest Hill Road is expanding, starting Monday.

Construction workers were cutting tress down early Monday afternoon.

"As somebody who has a young child, we don't let him come out in the front yard. We have dogs, we don't let them get near this road. It's very, very dangerous," Luke Williams said.

He lives near the intersection of Glenbrook Road and Forest Hill Road and says Forest Hill isn't safe the way it is now.

Kimberly Larson, a communications officer for GDOT, says once enough trees are cut down, utility companies like Macon Water Authority and Georgia Power will come in to move their lines. Then actual road work will begin.

The project will widen Forest Hill Road between Wimbish Road and Northside Drive and is expected to be complete by July 31, 2016. It will expand Forest Hill Road 400 feet north of Wimbish to 650 feet south of Northside Drive.

When finished, it will feature a 12 ft. through-lane in each direction, a 14 ft. flush median and 5 ft. sidewalks on both sides of the road. It will also realign Old Lundy Road across from Lokchapee Drive. There will be a four-way intersection created with a realignment of Newport Road, Forest lake Drive South, Normandy Road and Glenn Hill Court.

Some neighbors were fine with the construction, and said it should help even out traffic. Others who weren't so happy, said that at least the uncertainty is over.

For Williams, it means a less dangerous neighborhood for parents like him to worry about.

"I think is a great thing because we have an elementary school, we have a church up here on this road. I think it's gonna be safer for the kids in the neighborhood," he said.

The estimated cost of the project is $8.4 million. The prime contractor is J. Haynie and Associates.

Drivers are advised to use caution when driving in the area, as personnel and equipment will operate close to travel lanes.
