Money-saving ideas during Cherry Blossom

Lauren Stephens decided to take her daughter, Eden and her son, Ashton to the petting zoo at the Cherry Blossom Festival.

The petting zoo is just one of the free things featured this year.

"We went to Third Street park today because they had free carriage rides, they had free doughnuts and they also had free ice cream," Stephens said.

Going to events like the festival can break the bank, but not if you do the proper research.

Linda Maddox, the executive director of Central City Park, says there are plenty of activities that don't cost a dime, like feeding baby animals.

"We've got nightly entertainment, daily entertainment that's free," Maddox said, "They're registering kids who want to participate, I think it's 2 o' clock, to feed the baby goats with the bottles."

On average, a family of four could spend 10 dollars on parking, 40 dollars for unlimited rides for two children, and if they're each eating 10 dollars worth of food, that's at least 90 dollars in one day.

"We came here early because of the free parking, really. Most of the events that they have are usually pretty reasonable," said Stephens.

The free parking is available from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Monday through Friday, which helps in costs.

There's also a free shuttle on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It begins at Terminal Station, and stops at First, Second and Third Streets every 30 minutes starting at 11:00 a.m.

The shuttle rides end at 6:00 p.m. each day.

"Come down because there's so much that is free. Of course there's a lot of things that you have to pay for, like food and so forth, but I think you could come down and enjoy for a little bit and have a whole lot of fun," said Maddox.

On Saturday, all rides are free from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

On Sunday, they are free from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. if you have a current church bulletin.

Some people wearing a lot of pink could win prizes, like tickets and toys.

Not only can you save money, you can also win money.

If you spend $25 or more on merchandise in buildings 11 or 13, and bring your receipt to the front desk at building 13, you'll be registered for a chance to win $100.
