Kids learn about fire safety
News

It's important to learn about fire safety and prevention at a young age.

People at the Al Sihah Shrine Center in Macon and members of local fire departments taught some kids a lesson through fun activities and make believe.

Members of the Jasper County Fire Department dressed up as clowns, and acted out skits about fire safety.

They showed kids how to escape from burning buildings, and how to use fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

Some kids also helped spread the word on fire safety during a speech competition, where they demonstrated their own knowledge.

Organizers say the event supports their mission to help kids live healthy lives.

Joe Watson explained, "Kids are the most vulnerable, because they go to play around gasoline not knowing the dangers of it, and also having access to matches or things that cause fire."

First through third place winners of the contest took home cash prizes between $100 and $500.
