Reichert, commission spar over appointments

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert asked Bibb County's commission to approve a list of 17 new department heads Tuesday afternoon.

But not everyone was on board with Reichert's appointments.

The mayor wanted to appoint Edward Van Vanderwalker as the head of the animal welfare department.

He's a former staffer at the animal shelter, and he'd replace Sarah Tenon. She's been on the job for just a year and a half.

The commission voted to take that job off the list for separate discussion.

Reichert also named Clifford Howard as the public works director.

He'd replace Richard Powell. Reichert tried to fire him as public works director two years ago, but he appealed to the council and got his job back.

Four commissioners wanted to take that job off the list also, but a majority of the commission voted to go ahead.

Some commissioners also wanted to table Reichert's appointment of Terry Bizzell as director of the municipal court. Their motion failed.

That meeting is still underway.
