Central High student wins $250,000 scholarship

A Central High School student is one of the newest Gates Millenium Scholars.

Joseph Lofton's $250,000 scholarship will subsidize his pursuit of a double major in visual arts and history at both Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design through a dual-enrollment program, according to a release.

Lofton leaves behind the legacy of starting the National Art Honor Society at Central High School. He's part of the International Baccalaureate program, theatre, Mock Trial team and French club. He also attend Georgia Governor's Honor Program with a focus in art and design.

He was also named a QuestBridge Scholar, 2014 winner of the Young Arts Merit Award, a Jackie Robinson Foundation finalist and a Congressional Art Competition winner, where his artwork was displayed in the United States Capitol for a year.

Gates Millenium Scholars is funded through a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
