Seven Bibb student-athletes earn memorial scholarship

The Al Lucas Memorial Scholarship was awarded to seven student athletes from Bibb County High Schools. The scholarship is in memory of Al Lucas, who was a scholar athlete at Northeast High, before going to Troy University and then to the Carolina Panthers. He died while playing in an arena football league game for the Los Angeles Avengers in 2005.

Two student athletes from Northeast high, and one each from Howard, Rutland, Central, Southwest and Westside are seven of 70 recipients who have been awarded $70,000 over the years. William Finkelstein from Central High says he is shocked to earn the scholarship.

"You can see me, I'm not your typical looking athlete, but I feel like that's more of the reason I stand out. My approach to athletics involves a lot of teamwork and encouragement," says Finkelstein.

The seven scholarship recipients are:

Jarodney Roberts- Northeast High

Shan'Tricia Vinson- Northeast High

Will Finkelstein- Central High

Celia Dann- Howard High

TyAsia Grayer- Rutland High

Shakenya Peters- Southwest High

Donterious Copeland- Westside High
