Retired Bibb teacher turns 100 years young

One former Bibb County educator celebrated her 100th birthday and 40 years of teaching.

Carolyn Pitts was born and raised in Pleasant Hill and attended LH Williams Elementary School.

She says although she started teaching at age 16, she told her first superintendent that she was 21.

She taught at George Washington Carver and Henry Hunt Elementary schools from 1930 to 1970.

A few of her former students and coworkers were at the celebration, and gave a few words.

Pitts says her students hold a special place in her heart.

"They moved forward with good jobs some of them, a lot of them were able to go to college and then they went into the field of teaching," she said while laughing, "They told me that's the reason they went in, they want to be like me!"

The former educator said her secret to reaching 100 years old was through prayer and serving God.
