Riverside Cemetery honors veterans for Memorial Day | News
One by one, their names were read -- men, women, members of all different branches of military, and wars from World War II to Vietnam.
All 35 were veterans who passed away in the last year and were buried at Riverside Cemetery in Macon.
The cemetery paid tribute to them as part of their annual Memorial Day commemoration event.
In addition to speakers from Robins Air Force Base, various groups placed wreaths in honor of the veterans.
"It makes you feel proud to be an American," says Marion Garette of Macon. Her brother, Sonny Barfield served in the Navy in World War II and died in 2013.
The cemetery says each year, more members of the "Greatest Generation" of World War II and Korean War veterans are lost.
Riverside Cemetery is also planning on adding a Veterans Memorial Plaza on a hill above the Ocmulgee River.
Memorial Day is schedule for Monday, May 26th this year, but the event was held a week early because many people go out of town for the holiday.
