Macon summer camp makes exercise fun

According to the CDC, in 2012, more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

One day-camp in Macon is trying to change that by showing kids just how fun exercise can be.}

"It's really fun, because it's not all about just doing exercises, you also get to have fun," said Addey Godfrey.

She's 11 years old and has been coming to 'Camp Fun n' Fit' for the past 5 years.

The camp lasts throughout the month of June at the Macon Health Club.

Erin Comer is one of the instructors. She is a Public Health graduate student at Mercer University.

"We'll come in here and play games like this, or we have little scooters we'll have them roll around on, just as long as they're having fun," Comer said.

She and a few other students created this year's schedule.

Kids can enroll for just a week, or the whole month.

"We just kind of looked up some kids games and I also looked up some stuff that we used to do at old boot camps to help them participate," Comer said.

The camp is one way parents can combat childhood obesity.

According to the CDC, around 12.5 million children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 19 were obese in 2012.

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta say almost 1 million of those children live in Georgia.

Comer says kids learn about healthy practices at the camp too.

"We try to have a health class with them once a week, and those health classes vary from how to wash your hands, wear sunscreen," she said.

Addey says the workouts don't even feel like exercise.

"It makes you not really realize it, but you're actually getting really fit while having so much fun," she said.

"Just getting them out and parents participating helps them enjoy it alot more," Comer said.

The camp includes trips to the Sportz Quest gymnastics center, and to amusement parks like Six Flags.
