Golf tournament honors Medal of Honor recipient | News
A golf tournament was held in Macon Saturday to honor a fallen soldier.
The first annual Sgt. Rodney M. Davis Memorial Golf Championship was held at the Bowden Golf Course. The tournament helps raise money for scholarship funds in memory of Sgt. Davis. He's the only person in Macon to receive the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest award. He gave his life when he laid his body on top of a grenade to save his fellow marine soldiers in Vietnam.
Sergeant Davis' brother Gordon said about his brave sacrifice, "It's about courage, understanding and love. And he had what most people don't have, and that's somebody that's willing to give their life. We talk about doing it but to actually do it without hesitation, he was that kind of person."
Years after his younger brother passed away, Gordon holds on to his fondest memory. "When he left he said, 'Remember whatever happens to me, make sure my kids are raised as Davis'.' Over the last 40 years, it's come to something that puts me to sleep ever night and wakes me up every morning."
All proceeds go to the scholarship program that helps Bibb County high school seniors and to keep up and restore historic Linwood Cemetery, where Sergeant Davis is buried.
Dr. Robert Williams, Dr. Ulysses Byas and Mr. Monroe Jackson Jr. were also honored at the event.
