Kumho's Bibb tire plant expected to open in 2016

Kumho Tire plans to start construction on its $413 million tire plant in south Bibb County in time to open in 2016.

That's according to a news release from Macon-Bibb County Industrial Authority.

County officials made the announcement with Kumho officials Tuesday.

They said the plant would bring 450 good-paying jobs to the region.

The Korea Heraldand the Korea Joongang Daily both cited an announcement from the tire manufacturer on Tuesday. We could not reach Kumho officials for comment.

But both said that the company plans to spend $413 million on its south Bibb plant and expect the factory to open in early 2016.

The plan still needs approval from Kumho's creditors, as the company has battled debt problems for several years, the Korean reports said.

The plant will produce 4 million tires a year.

Kumho announced in 2008 that it planned to build the factory in the Sofkee Industrial Park in 2008.

But after celebrating the groundbreaking, the company put their plans on hold, due to the global economic crisis and their own financial problems. Construction never got underway.

Last year, Kumho said they expected to start construction, but did not give an exact date.
