#Macon30 achieves goal of murder-free month | News
#Macon30 started at the beginning of June after a double homicide with the goal of going a month murder-free in the city.
Just 4 days later, 19-year-old Majesty Conover was shot and killed at the Colonial Terrace apartments on Houston Avenue, marking 4 homicides in a week.
From there, #Macon30 re-started its count, hoping to try for another month murder-free. July 4th put them past the mark.
#Macon30 started as a social media movement, but also included community events like "Peace in Park" designed to promote activities to keep kids occupied and focused.
Organizer Danny Glover says the program's strength came from getting people to "take back their community."
"You know, there are people that have been staying in neighborhoods for 20 or 30 years who are afraid to walk through their streets. We're asking and I'm personally asking that you break down those walls," Glover says.
Now that the city has reached its goal, Glover says #Macon30 will continue its murder-free tally and its programs moving forward.
