Former head of Macon daycare arrested in Florida | News
The former head of Macon's Progressive Christian Academy now sits in a Florida jail on probation violation.
Christina Perera, also known by the names Christine LaRocca, Christina Hawkins and Holly Hawkins, was arrested after undercover detectives visited the daycare she was operating in Fort Myers, Florida.
According to a press release from the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the detectives went to Daniels Academy pretending to be parents seeking daycare for their child. Perera introduced herself as Holly and gave them a tour.
When the detectives informed Perera that they were in fact detectives and that she was under arrest for a warrant from Marion County, she called for Douglas Perera. Detectives learned that he was Perera's ex-husband.
Detectives spoke with a person who called herself the director of the facility, but no one there could produce any documentation of who they were or their role at Daniels Academy.
There were 24 children from the ages of a few months to one year old being cared for in the facility at the time.
Florida's Department of Children and Family Services took charge of the investigation at the daycare.
- Misrepresentation of business ownership
- Unscreened individuals on site working directly with children
- Employment documentation missing
- No license to operate a child care facility
- Potential criminal action to follow with DCF as complainant.
You may remember, Georgia's Bright From the Start agency shut down Progressive Christian Academy's daycare in October 2012 because it was being operated without a license by Perera.
Betty Tolbert, the founder of Progressive Christian Academy, filed a lawsuit against Sunrise Enterprises, claiming the company defrauded her and sent the school into foreclosure.
Christina Perera is currently in the Lee County jail awaiting a bond hearing.
