New Bibb superintendent takes oath of office

Bibb County's next superintendent starts in less than a week.

Curtis Jones was sworn in Thursday at the Bibb County Courthouse.

He's scheduled to start Monday. On that first day, he'll meet with each board member. Jones wants to ensure he and the members work as a team.

"I have to have a better understanding of who they are individually, what their visions are, what their hopes, their aspirations," said Jones.

Board President Thelma Dillard and member Daryl Morton know what they plan to tell Jones.

"I would like for him to work on and that's establishing the integrity of our Bibb system and helping to bring the community together again," said Dillard.

"Obviously improving the performance of our students. We need to do better," said Morton.

Fourteen Bibb County schools scored below 60 on the College and Career Ready Performance Index over three consecutive years. Jones said one of his first jobs in office will be to get to the bottom of why the schools aren't up to par.

"So we're gonna talk about who they are, why they're there, the plans they have for improving," he explained.

Also on Monday, Jones plans on visiting Southwest High School.

Jones was previously the superintendent of Griffin-Spalding County Schools. He was there for six years in that role.
