Two Mercer Students Charged With Damaging Bear

Two Mercer students were arrested Wednesday and charged with vandalizing a fiberglass bears installed last week as part of a public-art project.

The pair -- 22-year-old Jordan Luke McMahan and 21-year-old Chris Anthony Santiago -- are each charged with theft by taking and criminal damage to property, both felonies.

A Macon police news release says a campus police officer observed them kicking a fiberglass bear statue down the street near Tattnall Square Park toward the Mercer campus.

They allegedly pulled the bear off a ceramic platform that held it.

The two were booked in the Bibb County jail and later bonded.

The Macon Arts Alliance, which placed six bears around the College Hill Corridor last week, says it will replace the bear. They estimate the cost at $3,500 to $4,000.
