"Macon Miracle" Features Help Outside Of Schools | News
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
With his strategic plan for Bibb County Schools, Superintendent Romain Dallemand aims to boost the graduation rate to 100 percent by 2023.
Most of the plan is meant to help students do better in the classroom, but it also has initiatives to support students outside of school.
For example, it would partner with local agencies to provide school-based clinics, parenting classes, internet and computer access, and adult education and training for people in the community. The goal is to get the community and parents more involved in students' success.
Danny Glover, Chairman of the Bibb County Democratic Party, said he knows from a experience community involvement is a big part of a child's success.
"The community invested in me," he said, "and now its time for the community to cash in on their investment."
Glover grew up the oldest of four with a single mother who needed help running the house. He says when he got to school, he would act out for attention.
"I had a behavior problem in elementary school and middle school," he said. "I was 'bad,' as they would call it. I experienced getting suspended, I experienced going to ISS. I experienced the whole alternative school aspect of it."
He won a college scholarship from the 100 Black Men organization and that inspired him to go to college. He says scholarships won't be the answer for every Bibb county student, but the superintendent's plan may be a good start to finding one.
"You have to have a plan to solve a problem, but that plan must be coupled with love and honesty and sincerity."
