According to Hart Mortuary in Macon, Albert P. Reichert, Sr., the father of Macon Mayor Robert Reichert died Thursday, February 16, 2012.

Mayor Robert Reichert became the 41st Mayor of Macon on December 12, 2007. He began his second term on December 13, 2011.

His father, Albert, was born January 25, 1914, in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Jacob and Ann Phillips Reichert.

He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon, where he was editor of the school annual. With the help of Reverend Ed Cook, he enrolled at Emory University in 1932 and worked at various jobs to help pay his way through college. He was a member and president of SAE social fraternity at Emory and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He later was inducted into the Emory Sports Hall of Fame.

He then attended Duke University and on December 22, 1936, married Elizabeth Walton Bowen from Macon, who was then a student at Duke. He received a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Duke in 1937.

Albert Reichert was also a graduate of Mercer Law School in 1948, Mayor Robert Reichert in 1981 and Bowen Reichert in 2011.

During the summers, Albert Reichert worked at the Central Georgia Railroad in Macon. He worked in Macon for the railroad without pay until the railroad moved him to a paying job in Chattanooga, TN.

After a year, he was brought back to Macon, where he continued to work for the railroad until he enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve and served as an officer in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters during World War II.

Albert P. Reichert, Sr. is survived by his wife of 75 years, Elizabeth Walton Bowen "Chunk" Reichert, his son Albert Phillips Reichert, Jr., and Albert's wife, Burnam "Bebe" Walker Reichert, his son Stephen Allan Reichert, his son Robert Adger Bowen Reichert and Robert's wife, Adele Dunwody Reichert, his grandchildren, Albert Phillips Reichert, III and Albert's wife, Dr. Gillian Tracy Braulik, John Walker Reichert, Elizabeth Bowen Reichert, and Thomas Dunwody Reichert, and his great-grandchildren, Eden Pape Reichert, Luna Walker Reichert, and Sarana Burnam Reichert, his sister, Mary Louise Reichert Earnhardt, and his sister, Beverly Reichert Kennon.

There will be a private burial service. A memorial service will be held at Vineville United Methodist Church at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, with Dr. Marcus Tripp and Reverend James Duke officiating. The family will greet friends at the church after the service and also will greet friends at Hart's at the Cupola from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday.
