Dallemand Backs Down on Grade-Level Changes | News

Bibb County school superintendent Romain Dallemand said he is amending the parts of his strategic plan calling for grade restructuring and longer school days.

In a statement, Dallemand said, "I have decided to provide the School Board with a second option which will maintain the current grade level configuration."

The original plan called for elementary schools to end in 3rd grade, middle schools to hold grades 4 to 7, and high school to start in 8th grade.

He announced his decision on the day before the school board holds a public forum on the strategic plan at Southwest High School. 

Dallemand said that would have saved more than $23 million, by allowing the district to close up to 12 schools and cutting 300 teacher jobs.

If the board approves the amendment, he said those savings will no longer be realized.

Dallemand said he made the decision after hearing feedback from parents who felt the change in grade configuration would decrease their children's safety.

School board member Lynn Farmer said the amendments are a good first step.

"I always think its a good idea when we listen to the community and make changes based on that feedback," Farmer said. "I do believe that overwhelmingly we re hearing that parents and other stake holders are concerned about discipline in the schools and we have a current policy that is not being followed and I think we are hearing form this community that they want discipline improved before they move further with this plan."

Now, the board can choose to implement safety measures and wrap around services from the plan. Then, in 2014, the district would put together a task force to look into changing the grade configuration.

Dallemand also amended the part of the plan that would' have extended the school week for all students.

"As superintendent, I will continue to encourage students, parents, and district and building leadership to utilize the expanded opportunities for learning that will be available through after school programs and community partnerships," he said.

"However, the extended day schedule with a minimum of 10 additional hours a week will no longer be required for all students."
