Bibb County Implements New Shelter Rules

Macon Animal Shelter is now Bibb County Animal Services, and Animal Control is now the Macon-Bibb County Department of Animal Welfare.

Bibb County commissioners made those changes Tuesday morning, three days after they took over the department from the City of Macon.

"Now the commission has put their stamp on it and embraced the entire department, which I think is a great thing," said interim director Deborah Biggs.

They also adopted a new mission statement, implemented new fees for county residents and approved a new management structure that eliminates two vacant animal control officer positions and creates room for a senior animal shelter attendant.

Commissioner Lonzy Edwards says the tweaks in the name wording set the tone for what the county hopes to accomplish in coming years.

"It says to me that we are a caring community," he said, "that we are not just mistreating animals, that we are not just trying to do whatever is necessary through whatever means necessary to deal with this population, and we need to do it in the most humane way possible."

Edwards said at the next commission meeting, they will decide on more policies for the shelter, including whether or not to be open on Saturdays.
