New Electric Charging Station Debuts | News
Bibb County just got a little more eco-friendly with the installation of a new electric charging station that will be open the public.
Located in front of the Bibb County Courthouse in downtown Macon, the charger will offer drivers of electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf the opportunity to re-charge their cars free of charge.
It's all part of the Bibb County Green Team, an initiative to encourage residents to purchase more eco-friendly cars.
13WMAZ spoke with people outside the courthouse who were excited about the new charger. "I think it's great," says Rabron Kyle Brown of Macon, who hopes to purchase an electric vehicle in the future.
But while most people we spoke with expressed excitement about going green, local car dealers says people aren't putting their money where their mouth is.
At Youman's Chevrolet, Commercial and Fleet Manager Chris Parker says they only have one Volt on the lot, and have only sold one other. The same is true at Paul Walsh Nissan, where salesman Matthew Slaughter says they've only sold one Nissan Leaf.
"Americans still like their gasoline powered cars," says Parker, adding that he thinks a full roadway of electric cars is still a while down the road.
In addition the free charging that will be offered by Bibb County, the federal government offers buyers of Volts and Leafs a $7,500 tax credit.
