Macon Woman Battles Frost to Protect Banana Tree | News
Pearlie Watkins says for 8 years, her banana tree had only served to beautify the view from her sun room, but Wednesday, the tree bore a surprise.
"My husband came in, and he told me there were bananas on the tree," said Watkins. "I just knew he was teasing me, and I said, 'Oh, no, you're not telling me the truth.'"
But the tree had borne 5 bunches of tiny green bananas.
"It felt like the birth of a baby in the family," she said.
Now Watkins's concern is for her tree to survive frosty weather. Thursday, temperatures hit 30 degrees overnight. Watkins says she kept the tree warm with heating bulbs and it survived.
"God had blessed us with a fruit-bearing banana tree, and in Macon, Georgia of all places," said Watkins.
She's trying to keep the tree from frostbite al long as possible, or at least until the fruit matures.
