MACON, Ga. - A game-high 23 points from sophomore Precious Bridges and a tenacious team defensive effort lifted the Mercer women's basketball team to a big 46-43 win over Davidson on Wednesday evening at Hawkins Arena.

Mercer moves its overall record to 4-2 with the win, which ties the team's best start through the first six games of a season since the 1999-2000 campaign.

Bridges also tacked on six rebounds and two steals to go along with her 23 points, which is her second 20-plus scoring effort of the season. Bridges wasn't alone on the offensive end, as junior Kendra Grant chipped in with 10 points and junior Sharnea Boykin dished out a season-high eight assists in the win.

The Bears jumped out to a quick start in the early going, beginning the contest on a 9-0 run over the first 4:51 of the game.

The Orange and Black used the run as a spring board as they possessed a comfortable lead throughout most of the first half. A three-pointer by Bridges sent Mercer into the locker room with a 25-15 advantage.

It would be Davidson, however, that came out of halftime the more determined team. The Wildcats began the second half on a 15-5 run and tied the game at 30-30 with 9:52 left in the second half after a jumper by senior Sophia Aleksandravcicus.

Mercer quelled the Davidson storm not with its offense, but with its defensive pressure. For the game, Mercer held the Wildcats to 29% shooting from the field and forced 20 turnovers.

The Bears clung to a one possession lead in the late stages of the game before an old-fashion three-point play by Grant made the score 43-39 Mercer with 1:49 seconds left in the game.

After Davidson scored the next four points, it was forced to foul and Bridges came through hitting three-of-four clutch free throws to seal the win for the Bears.

Aleksandravcicus led the Wildcats with 18 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Mercer is back on the court when it travels up to Athens to take on No. 8 Georgia on December 4. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
