Macon Police: Man Hit Neighbor With Bat | News
Macon Police charge John Valerie Conover with Felony Murder in the death of his neighbor, Alterese Carter, for allegedly hitting her with a bat.
Macon police say Conover hit 46-year-old Alterese Carter in the head with a baseball bat Friday.
She later died at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Witness, Rosyln Williams, says the dispute was over a ladder.
Conover's girlfriend, Alicia Wilson, says Carter's children started the deadly brawl on the corner of Mercer St and Atlantic Ave.
"As he walked off, that's when the kids attacked him with bats and sticks," says Wilson.
Williams says Alterese Carter, the children's mother, was also armed with a bat.
"She was swinging, everyone was swinging at him. She hit him one time and when she hit him, he picked up the bat and swung back," says Williams.
Wilson adds, "As he hit her in the arm, that's when she pretended he hit her and she fell back."
Macon police say Conover struck Carter in the head with a baseball bat and also hit Carter's husband when he tried to intervene.
13WMAZ's Judy Le called and knocked on the Carter family's home, but the Carters were not available to comment.
"He was defending himself because if bats coming at me, I know how I'd feel," says Williams.
Conover is charged with battery, aggravated assault, and violating probation. So far, there is no word from Macon police on any additional charges against Conover.
