On This Day... 80 Years Ago, Little Richard Was Born

On this day...

"Awop-bop-a-loo-mop Alop-bam-boom!"

...in 1932, Richard Wayne Penniman was born in Macon's Pleasant Hill neighborhood. He would go on to worldwide fame as Little Richard--the never bashful, self-proclaimed Architect of Rock n' Roll

Little Richard was inducted with the inaugural class of stars into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, and sits at #8 on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists of All-Time list, having been a significant influence on Elvis, Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson and fellow Maconite Otis Redding, who he would later induct into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame (1989).

He left rock music for evangelical Christianity, eventually combining his love for both, and had a late career revival thanks to film and TV appearances

...in 1933Prohibition ended when Utah became the 36th U.S. state to ratify the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution, which overturned the 18th Amendment that made the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol illegal in the United States.

... in 1955 E.D. Nixon and Rosa Parks officially led the Montgomery Bus Boycott after Parks was convicted and fined for refusing to give up her seat.
